Hypnosis is really an intriguing topic. It seems as though we’re just beginning to understand the usefulness of hypnosis, yet it’s been used for a long time. The following is a brief overview of hypnosis through the years, and you might find yourself a little surprised by a few of its uses.

It was in the year 1841 that James Braid coined the term Hypnosis, but prior to that it had been known as Mesmerism. Braid opted to update the name as he now had a fuller understanding of how hypnosis actually worked. In Mesmerism, practitioners believed they had some special knowledge or unique power, and that for this reason, people became mesmerised. It was Braid who discovered that the operator didn’t have any unique power, but instead the trance resulted because of what was going on within the subject’s mind.

It was in the early 1900’s that Emile Coue promoted the usefulness of hypnosis in the form of auto-suggestion. The result was the ability to give suggestions to one’s self, this strengthened the discovery Dr Braid made before him, trance was a self induced state of mind. The approach he took was a product of Braids findings before him. The face of hypnosis was changing as people now explored hypnosis as a self induced state, rather than a state reliant on the hypnotist.

Sigmond Freud who is renowned for his work in psychology, at first dismissed the value of hypnotherapy at the start of his career. This resulted in a decline in the experimentation with hypnosis during that period. He massively changed his views about hypnosis as time went on, unfortunately his negative comments on hypnosis remained in the minds of therapists at the time. Thankfully it’s because of the magicians who used hypnosis, that it didn’t die out during that time.

In the 50’s Psychologist Milton Erickson developed a new style of hypnotherapy. This approach began to move away from the classical approaches, and was called indirect hypnosis. Doctor Milton Erickson became famous for his ability to hypnotise patients who had trouble entering hypnosis with other therapists.

Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, was a huge influence on hypnosis in the mid 1900’s, had success with a much more direct method than Doctor Milton Erickson. Dave Elman was well known for his rapid and no-nonsense methods?, many of which are still used today. He was perhaps best known for lecturing anaesthesiologists about the value of hypnosis for anaesthesia, many of his teachings are often used to this day to help with pain-free childbirth and hypno-analysis.

The author of ‘The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis’ was Ormond McGill, also known as ‘The Dean’. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond McGill died in 2005.

In 2010, one of the geniuses of this generation was buried, Gil Boyne. A follower of Dave Elman, Gill took Stage hypnotist Dave Elmans teachings and fashioned a highly advanced hypno-theraputic system. The book ‘Transforming Therapies’ was the synthesis of his learnings in hypnosis.

Today hypnotists have a bigger wealth of information at their fingertips than they can even digest. Information collaboration across the internet is producing hopeful breakthroughs in areas such as M.S. and cancer and certain other hard to treat conditions. The more commonly used interventions, for example smoking and weight loss continue to improve as well. With the improvements happening in hypnosis as we speak, it is really an amazing time for the clinical use of hypnosis.
